The Latest Generation of Fiduciary Failures
 
We will discuss recent fiduciary court cases and share key lessons and best practices to mitigate risk for plan sponsors and service providers. Attendees will learn about:
      • The evolution of retirement plan lawsuits including allegations of expensive plan fees, improper investments, forfeiture account allocation methods, and the new litigation related to excessive health plan fees.
     • Emerging themes from recent court cases related to small retirement plans and higher education lawsuits, cybersecurity, statute of limitations, stable value funds and investment diversification.
     • Best practices for plan sponsors related to reviewing and selecting service providers and fiduciary processes.

As vice president of Wealth and Retirement, Deana is responsible for business growth, strategic consulting and client retention. Deana excels at

creating strong consulting partnerships with employers and industry colleagues and in designing workplace retirement and benefits strategies that align with the business goals of organizations and the well-being of their employees. As an innovator who challenges the status quo, she is driven to improve the financial security of individuals and families. Throughout her career, she has served in leadership roles with several of the nation’s leading retirement, benefits consulting and insurance service providers.
 
Deana balances her professional success with a commitment to community and family. She is an active volunteer for the National Association of Plan Advisors, an affiliate of the American Retirement Association, and contributes to the Retirement Advisor Council’s financial literacy initiative. She serves as board director of The Forum of Executive Women, a membership organization of over 600 executive women who hold the senior-most positions in organizations, where she leads the creation and delivery of board governance education, advocacy, and allyship initiatives and is chair of their Women in Leadership committee. Deana co-chairs the local chapter of WIPN (WE Inspire Promote Network), a national organization that is advancing equity and opportunity for women in the workplace retirement industry. As a volunteer for the local US Naval Academy Alumni Association’s parents association, she supports midshipmen and their families.
 
A graduate of Duke University with a degree in economics, Deana was acknowledged as a top retirement plan adviser by PLANADVISER in 2022 and 2023 and recognized as a top women advisor captain by the National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA) in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Deana is the proud mother of two sons, a US Navy aviator and a financial markets enthusiast, and enjoys spending time with her Labrador retriever.

In this role, Ruben provides a unique, modern approach to defined contribution. As an active speaker, he helps educate advisors, investment committees, and plan sponsors on trends and developments within the DC space. Ruben draws on his extensive knowledge of qualified plans and the retirement industry to assist advisors and plan sponsors with their retirement plan objectives and concerns. Prior to joining Janus in 2015, he was a director and institutional retirement plan specialist at Deutsche Bank. Earlier, he held a financial consultant and sales position at The New England Insurance and Investment Company in New York City.
 
Ruben earned a bachelor of science degree in business marketing from Manhattan College. He holds FINRA Series 7 and 63 securities licenses as well as the Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor designation. He has 27 years of financial industry experience.

Stephanie represents individuals, small and large businesses, and tax-exempt entities in a broad range of tax and benefits areas, including

tax planning, M&A structuring, employee benefits plan issues, as well as public charity and private foundation planning and governance. She has successfully completed IRS VCP and DOL VFCP filings to correct qualified plan failures; assisted in structuring and consulting on various multi-million and billion-dollar corporate acquisitions for small, large, and Fortune 500 companies; and assisted in structuring and consulting on Section 355 Spin-Offs and Split-Offs for Fortune 500 companies.
 
Stephanie previously served as a Senior Associate at PwC in Philadelphia, where she worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions tax group with large, multinational, corporate clients. Her legal pro bono experience includes working on various tax law cases for low-income clients and also preparing Pennsylvania and federal tax returns. She has worked on cases with Philadelphia VIP, PVLA, and Pennsylvania SeniorLAW Helpline.
 
A graduate of Villanova University School of Law, Stephanie earned a J.D. and LL.M in tax. She received the Dean’s Merit Scholarship and the Dorothy Day Award for Pro Bono Service and served as President of the Tax Law Society. During law school, she externed for Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Hey of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She is an Adjunct Law Faculty at Temple University Beasley School of Law and teaches Qualified Employee Benefit Plans and Executive Compensation through the Graduate Tax Program at Temple.
